The Ultimate French Alps Mountain Guide for 2026

A night in the French Alps is the experience travellers remember longest. You leave the valley behind, ride a cable car above the clouds as the light turns orange, and eat fondue around a fire while the peaks glow pink at dusk.
Chamonix is the easier option — around an hour from Geneva airport, with lifts right at the edge of town. Val d'Isère, reached via a longer mountain drive, is wilder and quieter, but needs a transfer of about three hours through the high passes.
Chalets range from simple mountain lodges with shared bathrooms to luxury pods with proper beds, sheepskin rugs, en-suite showers and hot tubs. Whichever you choose, take a warm layer: mountain nights drop sharply, even in summer.
Our alpine trips include hotel pickup, a comfortable transfer, an English or French speaking driver, a cable car pass, dinner, breakfast and sunrise over the peaks. Two nights is ideal if you want time in the valley villages and Mont Blanc viewpoints on the way.
