Booking tips for ferry travel

A little planning turns the crossing into part of the holiday.

Book early for peak season

July, August and Easter crossings sell out. Book at least three months ahead for cabins and vehicle spaces.

Overnight saves a day

Sail from Portsmouth or Ireland overnight and wake up in France, saving a hotel night and a long drive.

On-board comfort

Larger ferries have restaurants, cinemas, shops, kids' play areas and pet-friendly lounges. Cabins are worth it on routes over 4 hours.

Choose the right port

Calais is fastest but busiest. Western ports cut driving time if your destination is Brittany, Normandy, the Loire or the south-west.
